Black History Month Adult Book Spoltlight!
Walking with the Wind: A Memoir of the Movement follows civil rights icon John Lewis’ evolution as boy from the cotton fields of rural Alabama to the halls of the US Capitol as a member of the United States House of Representatives. Lewis, a mentee of Martin Luther King Jr. was instrumental figure in the early civil rights movement, promoting non-violent protest to achieve the goals of the movement. As he famously said, “Never be afraid to make some noise. Get in good trouble. Necessary trouble.” In this memoir, he weaves his experiences from the Nashville Movement, the Selma to Montgomery March, as a Freedom Rider, and to the halls of Congress into a story of courage and strength in the face of violence and intimidation. While Mr. Lewis passed away in 2020, his courage, passion, and leadership live on through his words and immeasurable contributions to our country.

Black Wall Street: From Riot to Renaissance in Tulsa's Historic Greenwood District by Hannibal B. Johnson is a non-fiction book that follows the inspiring and sad history of one of America's most prosperous African-American communities located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Greenwood District in Tulsa was known as "Black Wall Street" because it was a thriving self contained economy where almost all business owners and residents were African-American. When a black man was accused of assaulting a white woman the surrounding white communities became enraged without waiting for due process. This sparked a series of racial riots that resulted in the complete destruction of the district. This tragic story both highlights the injustices of racial prejudice in the past as well as the present.
