Who Was Maya Angelou by Ellen Labrecque details the incredible life of the famous American poet and Civil Rights Activist Maya Angelou. Born in St. Louis, Missouri as Marguerite Annie Johnson in 1928, Angelou began her life as the daughter to Vivian Baxter and Bailey Johnson. Throughout her life, Angelou had many careers, she was a cable car conductor as well as a singer and dancer in San Francisco. She never lost her love of reading and writing poetry, however, and during the 1960s she began to write screenplays with the famous writer Oliver Killens. During this time she also became involved in the Civil Rights Movement meeting many famous Civil Rights Activists such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. It wasn't until the 1970s that Angelou's first book of poems was published to critical acclaim. Maya Angelou's poems are now taught in classrooms across America and they help to inspire the next generation.
